Terms of Service

Last updated July 3, 2026

These terms cover how schools, teachers, and families may use BookIsles. We’ve kept them as plain as we can — please read them, and reach out with any questions.

1. Agreement to these Terms

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of bookisles.com and the BookIsles reading service (the “Service”), provided by BookIsles (“we”, “us”). By creating an account, using the Service, or agreeing to these Terms on behalf of a school, district, or family, you agree to be bound by them. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Who may use the Service

Accounts are created by adults — teachers, school administrators, or parents — who are at least 18 years old and able to enter into a contract. Children use the Service only through an account set up for them by their school or parent, who is responsible for that child’s use.

If you accept these Terms on behalf of an organization (such as a school or district), you represent that you have authority to bind that organization.

3. Accounts & security

You are responsible for the accounts you create and for keeping login credentials confidential, including class and family codes issued to children. Notify us promptly of any unauthorized use. You are responsible for the activity that occurs under accounts you manage.

4. Subscriptions, trials & billing

  • New accounts may include a free trial. During the trial you have full access to the library; when the trial ends, reading is paused until you subscribe.
  • Paid plans are billed in advance on a recurring basis for the plan you select (for example, a monthly homeschool or classroom plan). School and district pricing is arranged separately.
  • Unless stated otherwise, fees are non-refundable except where required by law. You can cancel at any time; access continues until the end of the current billing period.
  • We may change plan pricing on a prospective basis with reasonable notice.

Where billing is not yet enabled for your account, only the free features and trial apply until a paid plan is offered.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to: (a) share, resell, or provide access to the Service outside your school or family without authorization; (b) attempt to access accounts or data you are not permitted to; (c) copy, download, scrape, or redistribute books, narration, or other content except as the Service allows for normal reading; (d) interfere with or disrupt the Service; or (e) use the Service to violate any law or the rights of others.

6. Content & intellectual property

The books, illustrations, narration, software, and other materials made available through the Service are owned by BookIsles or its licensors and are protected by intellectual-property laws. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to access and use the Service and its content for your own educational or family reading use, subject to these Terms. All rights not expressly granted are reserved.

7. Recordings & submissions

If a child records a reading, or you otherwise submit content to the Service, you (or the responsible school/parent) grant us the limited right to store and process that content solely to provide the Service — for example, to score a reading for accuracy and make it available to the child’s teacher. We do not use these recordings for advertising and do not claim ownership of them. Handling of recordings is described in our Privacy Policy.

8. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect and use information, including our commitments regarding children’s privacy (COPPA) and student records (FERPA). By using the Service you acknowledge that Policy. Schools may request a data processing agreement.

9. Availability & changes to the Service

We work to keep the Service available and reliable, but we may modify, suspend, or discontinue features from time to time, and the Service may occasionally be unavailable for maintenance or reasons outside our control. We will use reasonable efforts to give notice of significant changes to school and district customers.

10. Disclaimers

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available.” To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any particular educational outcome will be achieved.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, BookIsles will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, revenue, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the claim.

12. Termination

You may stop using the Service and close your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you breach these Terms or to protect the Service or its users, including children. On termination, your right to use the Service ends; provisions that by their nature should survive (such as intellectual-property, disclaimer, and liability terms) will survive.

13. Governing law & changes to these Terms

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which BookIsles is established, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. We may update these Terms from time to time; if we make material changes we will update the “Last updated” date and, where appropriate, notify account holders. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
