The pieces to colour and cut out

Page 2 holds these 181 shapes as separate cards with dashed cutting lines. Each card carries a letter, a dot in the colour that piece should be, and the colour’s name — so a child can colour and cut without turning back to another sheet. The letter is how the piece finds its place on the canvas. Either way they can be cut in any order.

About this printable

Across three pages, your child pieces together a big jellyfish using 181 separate geometric shapes, so the project builds slowly and there's always another small piece to hunt for and cut. The first page holds the wide, rounded bell of the jellyfish, made from overlapping circles and soft curved bands that arc across the top like ribs. The second page is full of long, thin tentacle strips and tiny dot shapes that dangle beneath the bell, which is where scissor control really gets tested since the pieces are narrow and easy to snip too short. The third page adds the ocean scene around it — smaller fish shapes, bubble circles, and wavy sea-floor lines — so the finished jellyfish has somewhere to float.

Your child's job is simple to explain but takes real patience: cut out every shape, match it to its matching outline on the base picture by color and form, then glue it into place. With 181 pieces, this is not a five-minute task, and children often want to sort the cut shapes into little piles before gluing, which is a good instinct to encourage.

A grown-up's most useful role is holding steady during the tentacle page, since those thin curved strips can slip while cutting, and helping decide which pile a tricky shape belongs to when two circles look almost the same size. Expect this to be a sit-down, multi-session project rather than a quick one.

How to use this printable

  1. Cut out all 181 shapes from the three pages, keeping bell, tentacle, and ocean pieces in separate piles
  2. Lay the shapes over the jellyfish outline first to check colors and sizes before gluing anything
  3. Glue the bell shapes onto the top of the outline, working from the center outward
  4. Add the tentacle strips beneath the bell, matching each curve to its printed guide
  5. Finish by gluing the ocean background shapes around the jellyfish to complete the scene

What it helps your child practise

Best suited to ages 4–7, though younger children enjoy it with a hand and older ones tend to add their own detail.

Printing tips

Print at 100% (not “fit to page”) if you want the exact size shown. Ordinary copier paper is fine for crayons and coloured pencils; if your child prefers felt tips, slightly thicker paper stops the colour bleeding through. The drawing is pure black on white, so it uses almost no ink.

After colouring, try a story

BookIsles reads illustrated books aloud and highlights every word as it is spoken, so your child follows along and starts recognising words on their own. Free to try, no card needed.
