The pieces to colour and cut out

Page 2 holds these 15 shapes as separate cards with dashed cutting lines. Each card carries a letter, a dot in the colour that piece should be, and the colour’s name — so a child can colour and cut without turning back to another sheet. The letter is how the piece finds its place on the canvas. Either way they can be cut in any order.

About this printable

This activity book centers on a single striking butterfly, broken into 16 low-poly triangle pieces that fill its wings with color. Across the three pages, your child moves from seeing the whole picture, to cutting apart the numbered triangle pieces, to gluing each one back into its matching spot on the wings until the butterfly is fully rebuilt.

The first page shows the completed butterfly so your child knows what they're working toward. The second page holds the 15 cut-out pieces, each shaped and colored to match a specific triangle on the wings. The third page is the blank outline where those pieces get glued down, section by section, until the pattern reappears.

Grown-ups should expect to help most with the cutting, especially around the narrower triangle points near the wing edges, and with keeping the small pieces organized so none go missing before they're glued. Once the pieces are cut, most children can match colors and shapes on their own, though a little guidance with glue placement keeps the wings looking neat. It's a satisfying, hands-on way to explore symmetry and color while spending time with a favorite garden insect.

How to use this printable

1. Look at the finished butterfly on page one to see the color pattern on the wings
2. Cut out all 15 triangle pieces from page two along the printed lines
3. Sort the pieces by color or shape to make matching easier
4. Match each piece to its matching spot on the blank butterfly outline on page three
5. Glue the pieces down one at a time until the butterfly wings are complete

Printing tips

Print at 100% (not “fit to page”) if you want the exact size shown. Ordinary copier paper is fine for crayons and coloured pencils; if your child prefers felt tips, slightly thicker paper stops the colour bleeding through. The drawing is pure black on white, so it uses almost no ink.
