Page 1As the sun rises, a hummingbird slowly opens his eyes. All night his body was in a deep, cold sleep called torpor.
Page 2During that deep sleep, his heart barely beat at all — as few as fifty beats a minute. His body cooled down so he wouldn't burn up his energy before morning.
Page 3Now awake, he needs energy fast. He zips straight to a flower for his very first sip of sweet nectar.
